Heritage Crews

In partnership with the US Forest Service, this opportunity provides training and experience essential to heritage resource management and natural resource stewardship. Crews will assist national forests and partners in implementing their Heritage Program management needs. Projects may occur on the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas, Kisatchie National Forests, and National Forests in Mississippi. Crews will camp at project sites for the duration of the term of service, and campsites with showers will be provided at no cost.

Crew assignments will include, but are not limited to:

    • Pedestrian reconnaissance and subsurface probing (shovel testing)
    • Completing appropriate site documentation, site sketch maps and GPS locational information will be completed in the field under the direct supervision of the Forest Service Archaeologist (field supervisor).
    • Documenting and preserving artifacts found under the direct supervision of the Forest Service Archaeologist (field supervisor), and maintaining the confidentiality of cultural sites on forest service lands.
    • Following a work schedule that consists of 10 hour days, 10 days per tour. There will be 8 field days and 2 travel days per tour.
    • A crew time report will be filled out daily and signed by the field supervisor.
    • Wear required Texas Conservation Corps (TXCC) uniform displaying AmeriCorps logo daily

The start date is Aug 22 on site with the forest service through December 16, though an abbreviated TXCC orientation prior to this start date may be required.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Between the ages of 18-28 (crew member) or 21-28 (crew leader) and up to 35 for veterans (member/leader)
  • US Citizenship or Lawful Permanent US Resident
  • Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Ability and interest to work with a diverse group of people
  • Commitment to complete the entire term of service
  • Crew leaders only: clean 3-year Driving Record
