Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging are integral to American YouthWorks’ history, culture, and identity. As an organization, our goal is to create a diverse and inclusive environment that embraces and advances equity and opportunity for all.

What this means to us

American YouthWorks was established on the idea of a shared community. For that reason, one of our core principles is to create a diverse and inclusive workplace that reflects our employees’ backgrounds, cultures, perspectives, and experiences in order to better implement our mission to serve our young people.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and we build teams that are stronger and more effective because of their diversity.

American YouthWorks strives to create a workplace that recognizes and honors diversity and equity. We all share a social responsibility to uplift each other so we can all succeed, and that idea is a key component of our workplace culture. It is an important part of our organization that just as we embrace differences in the youth and young adults we serve every day, employees treat each other with the same understanding, respect, and acceptance.

Our goal is to create an authentic and supportive environment where every employee’s contributions are valued and everyone has the opportunity to grow and serve.

AYW’s DEIB Committee

With generous support from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, we began our DEIB work with a CONNECT research project that included racial equity surveys distributed to staff, stakeholders, board members, and partners, as well as focus groups to assess DEIB throughout the organization. Staff attended a variety of DEIB training opportunities through City of Austin, One Voice Central Texas, AmeriCorps Central Texas, and Leadership Austin. As a result of this work, a DEIB Committee was formed with representation from all departments. In our Strategic Planning process, DEIB principles were incorporated into all aspects of our 5-year Strategic Plan. The organization recognizes that this work is an ongoing journey and we are committed to learning from and responding to our community needs through a DEIB lens.
