Crews and Individual Placements

What is hitching?

A hitch is camping at the project site for the duration of the project. They are typically 5-10 days at a time, with 2-4 days off in between. Some crew types hitch constantly, some hitch occasionally depending on the project, and others never hitch.

How many people are on a crew?

Conservation Corps crews typically consist of 6-10 AmeriCorps members: 2 Crew Leaders and 4-8 Crew Members.

What kind of service will I be doing?

Projects vary from managing invasive species to disaster services (all potential project types). Not every crew will serve on a project of every type during their season. The vast majority of projects are outdoors and require physical, often repetitive labor with hand & power tools.

Where are crews and individual placements located?

What boots are recommended?

Boots must be 8” tall, all-leather and have slip-resistant soles for safety measures.

It’s recommended for boots to be waterproof, non-insulated, and have a reinforcement shank. Composite-toe boots are recommended over steel-toe boots, though neither are required.

For the Integrated Resource and Fire Mitigation Crews, it’s recommended for boots to be “fire-rated” with a vibram sole and without a metal shank. Extra insoles are ideal.

Cowboy boots are permitted, as long as they meet the boot requirements.

Costs and quality of boots can vary greatly. Anticipate spending $80-$100 for boots that’ll last a full term of service. If you’re interested in a career in this field, consider investing $150-$300 on higher quality boots that’ll last longer.
