Conservation and Disaster Response Team

Hours & Schedule Depending on the project, crews complete local work (Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm) or hitch (10 days at campsite, 4 days off). On-call for Disaster Response Deployment (typically lasts up to 30 days and is subject to change depending on circumstance).

Position Summary Conservation and Disaster Response crews are focused on conservation projects in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Mexico. They perform habitat restoration, trail building and maintenance, historical restoration, and disaster mitigation projects, and work with a variety of partners, from the National Park Service to state and county parks.
These crews are a state and federal resource during disasters, therefore remain on-call and able to deploy should a flood, fire, hurricane, or other disaster occurs. Crew leaders receive training in spontaneous volunteer management, donations management, and the Incident Command System. Common partners include FEMA and the Texas Department of Emergency Management.

Position Summary American YouthWorks, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, is a part of the GulfCorps Initiative (funded by the RESTORE Act and NOAA from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill) to help restore public lands and preserves in the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast regions.
GulfCorps crews engage in conservation and coastal restoration projects such as boardwalk construction, native species planting, invasive species and hazard tree removal, herbicide application, litter abatement, and trail maintenance.

Heritage Crew

Locations National Forests and Grasslands
Hours & Schedule 10 hour days, 10 days per tour (8 field days and 2 travel days)

Position Summary Working directly with US Forest Service archaeologists and paraprofessionals, crews assist in implementing Heritage Program management needs and resource stewardship. Crews will learn about the archeology of Texas, the laws and regulations of historic and cultural preservation, ethics, and how archeology is done on the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.
Crews will camp at project sites for the duration of the term of service, and campsites with showers will be provided.

Houston Environmental Action Team

Position Summary The Houston Environmental Action Team completes local habitat restoration and park improvement projects within the Harris County and Houston Metro area. Typical projects include urban landscaping, public lands improvement, and vegetation management.
We highly encourage you to apply if you are LGBTQ+, experiencing homelessness, or are involved with the criminal justice system.
Requirement Lives in the Houston area.

Integrated Resource and Fire Mitigation Crew

Ages 18-28, up to 35 for veterans
Position Summary American YouthWorks, partnering with the US Forest Service Southern Region, has positions available offering training and certifications in wildland firefighting and natural resource management. Crews of 3-5 will spend their season performing prescribed burn activities and restoration projects within Angelina-Sabine and Sam Houston National Forests. Ability to pass the Arduous Work Capacity Pack test (walk 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying 45 pounds) is required to complete the program.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Crew

Position Summary American YouthWorks partners with the National Park Service (NPS) at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Crews work directly with NPS staff on a daily basis, building strong connections that have helped past members achieve employment with the NPS.
Project work includes vegetation removal at various sites throughout the park’s 1000 acres, invasive plant removal, maintaining landscaped garden beds, fence removal and installation, and heavy vegetation removal in and along the historic irrigation canals that bring water from the San Antonio River to the missions. Projects are in highly trafficked areas at the missions where members can interact with park visitors, as well as in the quieter corners of the park off limits to visitors.

Summer Crews

Spend a summer working on conservation projects throughout Texas. Crews will focus on building conservation skills and engage in environmental education. Opportunities for travel and camping are available accordingly.

Position Summary American YouthWorks partners with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to create projects for the Trails Across Texas crews. These crews complete trail maintenance and trail construction projects, including creating new trails, building bridges, and improving existing trails throughout Texas State Parks.
