Position Summary The ARTES Program at Fort Sill is looking for driven individuals to help monitor and protect the unique ecosystems of the Southern Great Plains.

In this Individual Placement ARTES program, participants monitor native wildlife species, such as tricolored bat, monarch butterfly, black-capped vireo, and northern bobwhite, and increasing the installation’s resiliency by maintaining, enhancing, and restoring native wildlife habitat to better withstand increased frequency, duration, and intensity of drought, extreme weather, and wildfire events that are expected to impact the Southern Great Plains ecosystem where Fort Sill resides.

As an ARTES Individual Placement, you will:

-Deploy passive acoustic monitors and analyze bat survey data
-Collect and submit Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP) data
-Control invasive species, including musk thistle, eastern red cedar, and brown-headed cowbird
-Conduct roadside bobwhite call counts
-Perform other duties as assigned such as roadside herp surveys, ag compliance monitoring, or fish stocking

Education Internship

Position Summary Develop and present new curriculum-based classroom programs to the 1st – 5th grade students of Southeast Texas. Lead existing field trips in the country’s first National Preserve, work in Big Thicket’s visitor center, and experience numerous career development opportunities. This internship is a great fit for anyone pursuing a career in environmental education, elementary teaching, or the National Park Service!
Big Thicket National Preserve is a part of the National Park Service, and is located near the city of Beaumont and 75 miles northeast of Houston. Over a dozen separate land and water units make up the preserve, considered to be one of the most biodiverse areas in the United States.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications A background in curriculum-based lesson planning. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply!

Recreation and Visitor Center Technician

Position Recreation and Visitor Center Technician; AmeriCorps term of service

Position Summary Assist the Kisatchie National Forest staff in a variety of tasks throughout the forest. Work will include inspecting, improving, and maintaining public use areas including campgrounds, trails and trail heads, signage, facilities, and more. Provide assistance to forest service staff by helping at the front desk at the district office, where you’ll help with low-level administrative tasks and interact with forest visitors, answering questions about forest rules, access, events, and possibly engaging interpretative opportunities. There is potential to be involved in some aspects of fire management in the forest, including participating in prescribed burn operations.

Recreation and Visitor Service Representative

Position Summary Function as a key part of the team in charge of maintaining recreational resources, providing customer service and public relations for forest visitors, and serving as interpreters at public and partnership events sharing information about district resources. Duties will include explaining forest rules, amenities, and services to visitors, interacting with and potentially leading visitors in interpretive programs, and maintenance work on structures and amenities throughout the forest including signage, trails, multi-use areas, and facilities, patrolling wilderness and public use areas, and more.

Lands and Minerals Technician

Position Summary Assist the Forest Service with various aspects of land use monitoring and record keeping for Angelina, Sabine, Davey Crockett, and Sam Houston National Forests. Duties will include inspecting lands within the above forests to ensure permit holders are in compliance with land-use permits, and sorting information gained from inspections and other documents via database entry, spreadsheets, and other file organization strategies.

Forestry Recreation Technician

Hours & Schedule Thursday-Monday, 7:45am– 5pm | 900 hour term
Position Summary Work alongside US Forest Service Recreation Program staff in several recreation areas throughout the forest. You’ll interact with public visitors to the forest and help manage trails, campgrounds, recreation areas, facilities, and the budget for the recreation program.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications The ideal candidate for this position would be from the Huntsville/New Waverly area, have experience working on trail or outdoor recreation crews, and be bi-lingual in Spanish and English.

Youth Paddling Program Assistant

Position Summary Help promote the National Park Service’s (NPS) mission by leading youth through canoeing and kayaking adventures in Big Thicket National Preserve. The program strives to invite a larger audience into public lands by eliminating traditional barriers of inclusion in a safe and supportive environment. Engage with members of the community while helping to foster a positive experience with the outdoors and NPS staff.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications The ideal candidate for this opportunity will be familiar with the waterways of east Texas, and will need to be able to swim and tread water and work at least one weekend day each week.

Cultural Landscape Individual Placement

Position Summary Be part of a national effort to help ensure that the more than 400 national parks across the country preserve, reflect, and engage with stories of communities throughout U.S. history and for future generations. You’ll receive job training and complete work including grounds preservation maintenance, irrigation system management, landscape bed rehabilitation, and other associated tasks within the park’s multiple historic cultural landscapes.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications This program is specifically designed to engage those local to the San Antonio Missions Community and interested in natural and cultural resource management careers.

Preservation Apprentice

Position Summary Assist the park’s masonry and grounds preservation crews with a variety of tasks throughout the park. Primary duties will include restoration work of various structures using historically accurate masonry techniques. Other duties may include maintenance of the park’s 26 maintained landscapes via mowing and weed eating, debris removal, tree/bush pruning, rehabilitation of landscaped beds, etc., and assisting with controlling vegetation overgrowth along the acequias (irrigational canals) that run throughout the park.

Masonry Apprentice

Position Summary This position is an exciting opportunity to partake in the historic preservation of the Historic San Antonio Missions. In the Masonry Apprentice position, preserve and restore the surfaces of the Missions by completing masonry projects, including re-pointing of mortar joints and stonework. Receive direct mentorship by working closely with an experienced National Park Service staff masonry team.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications The ideal candidate for this position would be located in the San Antonio area and interested in a future career with masonry or historic preservation.

Historic Structures & Landscapes Technician

Position Summary The Ranch & Resource Management program is based at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park near Johnson City, TX. This is an exciting opportunity to help the park meet resource management goals like reducing the impact of invasive plants at the LBJ Ranch and meeting deferred maintenance goals throughout the ranch. In addition, you’ll learn first-hand what goes into the management of a historic working ranch as part of an overall cultural landscape with significant natural resources.
