Partnerships

American YouthWorks has the opportunity to place Conservation Corps program Individual Placements with our federal, state, non-profit, and local partners in the Central Southern United States.

Together, we create entry-level, career training positions tailored to your project needs — while sharing costs and employer responsibilities.

Individual Placement (IP) Positions are full-time, AmeriCorps service terms ranging from 3-11 months, during which, the IP will learn from you and be a member of your team. We will develop these positions together, including the number of IPs, the project types, recruitment, and IP supports.

IP cost-share partnerships are a way to invest in a young person’s early career — launching them into long-term positions with the partner, government positions, internships or graduate school.

Partners have included the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, nonprofits, and city and county governments.

Our Role

Throughout the term of service, we help support the partner and participant. We handle:

  • Recruitment (partner can choose to be involved), enrollment, and exit procedures
  • Check-ins, performance evaluations, and help managing participant experience
  • Timesheets
  • Workers’ Compensation, Health insurance (≥900 hour term lengths), and Liability insurance for participants doing fire projects
  • Vehicle training and insurance for participants driving AYW vehicles. If a participant needs to rent a vehicle, AYW will handle the car rental and training.
  • Gear, such as program shirts and basic ear, eye, and hand protection (hard hats, fire boots/clothes, and other gear provided on a case-by-case basis).

Partner’s Role

The partnering host site welcomes the IP as a new team member, integrating them into their daily operations. The host site handles project training, daily supervision and insight into multiple departments.

  • Daily supervision: Ensure clear direction and needed support (IPs may operate independently at partner and AYW discretion)
  • Project-based training
  • Vehicle training and insurance for participants driving partner vehicles.
  • (Preferred) Access to training and certifications
  • (Preferred) Housing if available, or housing stipend

Project Types

Each IP position description is tailored to the partner’s needs. The project scope can be broad or specific, though we do value a variety of project types that give insight into multiple departments.

A few of the projects must include at least one metric category our grantors look for — miles of trail built or improved, miles of waterway improved, and acres of public land improved. The majority of projects can be outside these metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is the federal agency for community service and volunteerism, and provides funds for intensive service roles throughout the country, helping to fill community needs. Our Conservation Corps program Individual Placement positions are AmeriCorps service roles, filling a community need in public and national resources.

The participants in these roles are considered AmeriCorps members, and receive AmeriCorps benefits — such as a living stipend, health insurance, and an education award upon successful completion of their service term.

What is Partner Cost Share?

American YouthWorks covers a percent of the participant’s cost.

Why is housing preferred?

If available, providing housing or a housing stipend is preferred, especially in remote locations where recruitment is challenging due to a small local applicant pool and/or a lack of housing for applicants not from the area. Together, we can try to leverage connections for local affordable housing, if they exist.

What are some examples of IP position descriptions?

The scope of work of an IP position can vary depending on partner needs. The most impactful IP experiences are those which expose the member to not only the skills related to their primary function, but also to other areas and departments at their host site.

Broad

Recreation/Visitor Center Technician IP (multiple sites, USFS)
Trails, camping and day use area routine maintenance and special projects, district office front desk, public outreach.
Members have opportunities to interact with other departments on occasion, especially if they show interest in learning more about them.

Specific

Heritage IP (Nat’l Forests & Grasslands in Texas, USFS, NFGT)
Archeology research, site prep and digs, artifact cleaning and preservation.

Education Intern IP (Big Thicket Nat’l Preserve, BITH)
Design and implement educational presentations on aspects of the preserve to local grade school children, lead field trips at the preserve.
