AmeriCorps members engage in career training, earn certifications, and address areas of social inequities in our communities.

What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is the federal agency for community service and volunteerism, and places AmeriCorps members in intensive service roles throughout the country. Some of those roles are with American YouthWorks’ YouthBuild program. These positions are temporary.

Positions

Casa Verde Builders (CVB) Construction Crew Member

Position Status Accepting applications for the January 20th, 2025 orientation.
Program and Position YouthBuild, AmeriCorps term of service (temporary)
Term Lengths 900 hours (5-6 months), 1700 hours (11-12 months)
Hours & Schedule Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
Ages 18-28
Position Summary Learn construction and green building techniques while building affordable housing, doing home repairs for low-income homeowners and building micro-homes for chronically unsheltered community members.
Project Sites include Community First Village (tiny house construction), Southeast Metro Park Ranger House (single family home construction), and Ecology Action (pergola and bird blind construction).
This pre-apprenticeship program prepares young people for pursuing careers such as electricians, welders, carpenters, and other skilled trades positions.
Required Experience No previous construction experience is necessary! Applicants must already have their high school diploma or GED, and either be a US citizen or have right to work documentation.
Certifications and Trainings OSHA10 and NCCER Core Curriculum certifications (guaranteed).
Potential certifications and trainings are NCCER Electrical, CPR/First Aid, Intro to Welding with Austin Community College, and Solar Installation (not guaranteed).

Public Health AmeriCorps (PHA)

Program and Position YouthBuild, AmeriCorps term of service (temporary)
Term Lengths 1700 hours (11-12 months)
Hours & Schedule Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
Ages 18 and up
Position Summary Earn a Community Health Workers (CHW) certification, then support local agencies by providing public health services.
PHA members address healthcare access, mental health services access, food security, and social & emotional wellbeing for children & families.
Project Sites include Austin Voices (CHW at Family Resource Center), UT School of Nursing (patient data entry, health vitals, etc.), and YMCA (Community outreach and project development).
The combination of a professional certification and a year of practical experience provides members with credentials for entry-level public health employment, or to continue their training in the medical field.
Required Experience No previous health care experience is necessary! Applicants must already have their high school diploma or GED, and either be a US citizen or have right to work documentation.
Certifications and Trainings Community Health Worker, CPR/First Aid, HIPAA training, and Mental Health training.
Potential certifications and trainings are OSHA-10 General Industry certification and any site-specific training as required.

Classroom Assistant

Program and Position YouthBuild, AmeriCorps term of service (temporary)
Term Lengths 1700 hours (11-12 months)
Hours & Schedule Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
Ages 18-28
Position Summary Assist the teacher in a credit recovery/ vocational training program, be a role model, and provide leadership for young people who have previously been disconnected from school and work.
Classroom duties include tutoring, preparing and presenting lesson plans, assisting with group projects, documentation, redirecting students, and helping students access community resources.
Classrooms with assistants are Healthcare, Manufacturing/IT, Casa Verde Builders, and GED.
Required Experience Applicants must have some college experience, experience working with youth, and a desire to work in an educational setting. They also must either be a US citizen or have right to work documentation.
Preferred Experience At least 6 months service with AmeriCorps or similar organization and relevant leadership experience.
Certifications and Trainings Opportunities to earn the same certifications as YB members, specific to the classroom:

  • Manufacturing/IT: IC3 and Manufacturing
  • Healthcare: Community Health Worker, Stop the Bleed, and HIPAA
  • Casa Verde Builders: OSHA 10 and NCCER Core Curriculum
