Austin Civilian Conservation Corps (ACCC)

Austin, TX (residents only)

The Austin Civilian Conservation Corps (ACCC) is an initiative with the City of Austin and American YouthWorks, to provide on-the-job training opportunities with high priority for individuals impacted by COVID-19, while contributing to the health and sustainability of Austin’s natural environment. Working on a crew, participants will complete conservation projects like invasive species removal, habitat restoration, wildfire mitigation, and trail building all throughout the City.

Applicants must be a current City of Austin resident (year-long minimum preferred) and live within Austin city limits zip codes. Uniforms and Personal Protective Equipment will be provided. This is a full time position (40 hours/week, Monday-Friday). All skills levels are encouraged to apply!

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Required

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION (Crew Members and Crew Leaders): High school diploma or equivalent;

EXPERIENCE (Crew Member): None.

EXPERIENCE (Crew Leader): Completion of AmeriCorps term of service, or One (1) year of previous experience with environmental, landscaping, construction, leadership, or conservation practices in the field or other relevant related experience with transferable skills; or participation in programs such as the Austin Civilian Conservation Corps, Green Workforce Collaborative, Emerging Green Leaders, Ranger Cadets, Youth Forest Council, etc. A strong desire and willingness to positively impact the communities in the City of Austin;

Preferred

Experience (Crew Member): Completion of AmeriCorps term of service OR six (6) or more months of experience in environmental conservation, land management, habitat restoration, construction or other relevant experience with transferable skills; or Participation in programs such as the Austin Civilian Conservation Corps, Green Workforce Collaborative, Emerging Green Leaders, Ranger Cadets, YouthForest Council, etc. A resident of the greater Austin area.

EXPERIENCE (Crew Leader): One (1) year or more of previous experience with environmental, landscaping, construction, leadership, or conservation practices in the field; Resident of the greater Austin area

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE (Crew Member):

  • General knowledge of the Greater Austin area; no conservation knowledge required;

KNOWLEDGE (Crew Leader)

  • General conservation principles,
  • Basic administrative and clerical procedures and systems,
  • Microsoft Office and Google applications;

 

SKILLS (Crew Member):

  • Effective in diverse community settings;
  • good problem solving and logistical skills;
  • Able to work independently and with a crew;
  • Flexible under pressure;
  • conflict resolution skills;
  • intermediate computer skills;

SKILLS (Crew Leader):

  • Lead teams and develop leaders;
  • Good problem-solving, logistical skills, and conflict resolution skills;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • Operate passenger van, truck with trailer and other heavy equipment.
  • Operate in diverse community settings;
  • Able to provide mentorship under stressful conditions.
