Individual Placements

Texas Conservation Corps (TXCC) works with our partners to provide Individual Placements, AmeriCorps members who serve the duration of their term at the partner site.

In order to facilitate a rewarding experience, TXCC works with the site to define measurable outcomes that the Individual Placement is able to fulfill. TXCC assists the partner with tools and resources to complete their project objectives, as well as manages members’ timesheets and project reporting.

Recreation and Visitor Center Technician

Agencies: U.S. Forest Service (USFS) | Location: Kisatchie National Forest – Boyce, LA | Positions: 3

These Individual Placements (IPs) will assist the Kisatchie National Forest staff in a variety of tasks throughout the forest. Work will include inspecting, improving, and maintaining public use areas including campgrounds, trails and trail heads, signage, facilities, and more. These members will also provide assistance to forest service staff by helping to man the front desk at the district office, where they will help with low-level administrative tasks and interact with forest visitors, answering questions about forest rules, access, events, and possibly engaging interpretative opportunities. These IPs may also potentially be involved on some aspects of fire management in the forest, including helping participating in prescribed burn operations.

Compensation: $2,400/month living allowance

Recreation and Visitor Service Representative

Agencies: U.S. Forest Service (USFS) | Location: Davy Crockett National Forest – Kennard, TX | Positions: 1

The Recreation and Visitor Services Representative IP will function as a key part of the team in charge of maintaining recreational resources, providing customer service and public relations for forest visitors, and serving as interpreters at public and partnership events sharing information about district resources. The individual’s duties will include explaining forest rules, amenities, and services to visitors, interacting with and potentially leading visitors in interpretive programs, and maintenance work on structures and amenities throughout the forest including signage, trails, multiuse areas, and facilities, patrolling wilderness and public use areas, and more.

Compensation: $2,400/month living allowance

Lands and Minerals Technician Individual Placement

Agencies: U.S. Forest Service (USFS) | Location: Lufkin, TX | Positions: 1

This position will be responsible for assisting the Forest Service with various aspects of land use monitoring and record keeping for Angelina, Sabine, Davey Crockett, and Sam Houston National Forests. The IP’s duties will include inspecting lands within the above forests to ensure permit holders are in compliance with land-use permits, and sorting information gained from inspections and other documents via database entry, spreadsheets, and other file organization strategies.

Compensation: $2,400/month living allowance

Cultural Landscape Individual Placement

Agencies: National Park Service and National Park Foundation | Location: San Antonio Missions | Positions: 3

In partnership with the National Park Service and National Park Foundation, this position is part of a national effort to help ensure that the more than 400 national parks across the country preserve, reflect, and engage with diverse stories of Hispanic and Latine communities throughout U.S. history and for future generations. Members will receive job training and complete work including grounds preservation maintenance, irrigation system management, landscape bed rehabilitation, and other associated tasks within the park’s multiple historic cultural landscapes.

This program is specifically designed to engage Hispanic and Latine young adults, ages 18–28, who are local to the San Antonio Missions Community and interested in natural and cultural resource management careers.

Compensation: $2,400/month living allowance

Preservation Apprentice Individual Placement

Agencies: National Park Service and National Park Foundation | Location: San Antonio Missions | Positions: 3

In partnership with the National Park Service, This position will be responsible for assisting the park’s masonry and grounds preservation crews with a variety of tasks throughout the park. Primary duties will include restoration work of various structures using historically accurate masonry techniques. Other duties may include maintenance of the park’s 26 maintained landscapes via mowing and weed eating, debris removal, tree/bush pruning, rehabilitation of landscaped beds, etc., and assisting with controlling vegetation overgrowth along the acequias (irrigational canals) that run throughout the park.

Compensation: $2,400/month living allowance

Forestry Recreation Technician Individual Placement

Agency: US Forest Service | Location: Sam Houston National Forest and Angelina-Sabine National Forest | Positions: 3

In partnership with the US Forest Service (USFS), TXCC will be placing three Forestry Recreation Technician AmeriCorps members at Sam Houston National Forest and Angelina-Sabine National Forest in East Texas. This position will work alongside USFS Recreation Program staff to work in several recreation areas throughout the forest. This position will interact with public visitors to the forest and help manage trails, campgrounds, recreation areas, facilities, and the budget for the recreation program.

The ideal candidate for this position would be from the Huntsville/New Waverly area and would have experience working on trail or outdoor recreation crews. Bi-lingual Spanish/English speaker strongly preferred.

Compensation: $2,400/month living allowance

Term Length: 900 HOUR

Schedule: Thursday-Monday 7:45 AM – 5PM

Coordinator for Black Community Outreach

Agency: National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program (NPS RTCA) |
Location: Austin, TX (or Remote / Work-from-Home) | Positions Available: 1

This rigorous AmeriCorps position provides an opportunity for someone with strong communications,
community organizing, and outreach skills to help advance the National Park Service’s outreach to
Communities of Color in Texas and Oklahoma. The selected candidate will also support American
YouthWorks ongoing research and outreach to communities in Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. The
selected candidate may choose to work at the Austin office or to work remotely (from home) if the
candidate has access to reliable internet and phone service. If travel and gathering restrictions allow, the selected candidate is expected to visit Austin for in-person orientation. Travel to relevant communities and projects may be possible. The dates and hours can be adjusted to accommodate selected candidate’s fall school schedule. Age requirement: 16-30 for Public Land Corps eligibility.

Compensation: $2,720/month living allowance

Schedule: Monday-Friday; Full-time

Term length: June 5 – November 10, 2023; 5-month position (Can be completed as part-time if returning to school in the fall)

Masonry Apprentice Individual Placement

Agency: National Park Service | Location: San Antonio Missions | Positions: 1

This position is an exciting opportunity to partake in the historic preservation of the Historic San Antonio Missions. In the Masonry Apprentice position, the Individual Placement member will preserve and restore the surfaces of the Missions by completing masonry projects, including re-pointing of mortar joints and stonework. The apprentice will also receive direct mentorship by working closely with an experienced National Park Service staff masonry team.

The ideal candidate for this position would be located in the San Antonio area and interested in a future career with masonry or historic preservation. No previous masonry experience is required. Age requirement: 21-28.

Indigenous/Native Partnerships Outreach Individual Placement

Agency: National Park Service | Location: see description | Positions Available: 1

The Individual Placement member will research and engage with local organizations, community groups, and key stakeholders in Indigenous communities in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado to identify recreation and conservation needs/goals, as well as the necessary support to meet the identified conservation/recreation goals. With support from Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) staff, the member will conduct direct interviews, site visits (as appropriate), and focus groups with the identified communities. In addition, this Individual Placement member will document and present information about successes and opportunities with the collaboration between RTCA and Indigenous communities.

The ideal candidate for this opportunity would have strong communications, community organizing, and outreach skills and have experience engaging with Indigenous communities. Individuals who identify as Indigenous/Native American are encouraged to apply. Age requirement: 16-30.

This position can be completed remotely or work-from-home if the candidate has access to reliable internet and phone service. Historic Structures & Landscapes Technician Individual Placement

Agency: National Park Service | Location: Cane River Creole National Historic Park | Positions Available: 1

This opportunity will partner with the National Park Service (NPS) to provide hands-on experience with the management of historic structures and landscapes at the Cane River Creole National Historic Park. During this term members will help with vegetation management, minor building repairs, and general custodial tasks at the park.

The ideal candidate for this position would be from the Natchitoches, LA area with an interest in launching their career with NPS. Age requirement: 21-28.

Youth Paddling Program Assistant Individual Placement

Agency: US Forest Service | Location: Big Thicket National Preserve | Positions Available: 1

This individual placement will help promote the National Park Service’s (NPS) mission by leading youth through canoeing and kayaking adventures in Big Thicket National Preserve. The program strives to invite a larger audience into public lands by eliminating traditional barriers of inclusion in a safe and supportive environment.

The ideal candidate for this opportunity will be familiar with the waterways of east Texas and will be expected to engage with members of the community while helping to foster a positive experience with the outdoors and NPS staff. They will need to be able to swim and tread water and work at least one weekend day each week. Age requirement: 21-28.

Ecological Research Technician Individual Placement

Agency: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service | Location: Austin, TX | Positions Available: 1

In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Austin Ecological Services Field Office (ESFO), this position is part of an effort to research and restore the native habitats of Central Texas. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver the ESFO conservation mission through on-the-ground research and monitoring, education and outreach, writing technical reports, and GIS mapping. This member will receive training in the monitoring of habitat restoration and research techniques. Both full- and part-time schedules can be accommodated.

Ranch & Resource Management Individual Placement

Agency: National Park Service | Location: Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park | Positions Available: 1

The Ranch & Resource Management program is based at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park near Johnson City, TX. This is an exciting opportunity to help the park meet resource management goals like reducing the impact of invasive plants at the LBJ Ranch and meeting deferred maintenance goals throughout the ranch. In addition, the member will learn first-hand what goes into the management of a historic working ranch as part of an overall cultural landscape with significant natural resources.
