Safety starts with us!

American YouthWorks (AYW) is committed to providing a safe environment for all program participants, staff members, volunteers, and partners within the communities we serve.

Below is a list of activities we are currently doing at our operating sites — Austin, TX; Houston, TX; and Baton Rouge, LA.

Safety & Risk Management - Mitigation

Mitigation

  • Screening visitors through the Raptor Technologies system
  • Requiring valid identification from visitors who enter our operations
  • Educating staff, program participants, volunteers, and other personnel on the Standard Response Protocol (SRP)
  • Educating the AYW community to be situationally aware and to report any safety concerns or violations
  • While AYW is not mandated by the Texas Education Code or Agency, our on-site partners are, and we will support them in meeting their requirements by conducting safety audits and door sweeps

Safety & Risk Management - Preparedness

Preparedness

  • On-site Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) in place and field policies and procedures for work-sites
  • Bi-weekly Risk and Safety Management Team (RSMT) planning meetings
  • Drills and exercises to educate and train staff, program participants, volunteers, and other personnel on proper emergency response actions
  • Coordination with local authorities and first responders to support collaborative efforts before, during, and after an emergency

Safety & Risk Management - Response

Response

  • Adoption of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) during emergencies
  • Effective agency-wide Emergency Notification System (ENS)
  • Collaboration with local and state response agencies
  • Development of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
  • Application of the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and the Standard Reunification Method (SRM)

Safety & Risk Management - Recovery

Recovery

  • Agency-wide Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP)
  • Crisis counseling and mental health support for staff and program participants
  • Development of a reunification plan for participants, staff, and parents
  • Agency-wide collaboration to quickly restore facilities and campuses to resume operations after an incident

Risk & Safety Committee

The Risk & Safety Committee is comprised of staff members and onsite partners from all operating sites to recommend best practices of systems, policies, and procedures to better mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and emergencies.
