Summer Youth Crews

Austin TX | Houston, TX | San Antonio, TX | Tribal Nations

These crews are open to current high school students, recent high school graduates, college students and young adults looking to spend a summer working on conservation projects throughout Texas. Led by two adult crew leaders, members will work on trail improvement and habitat restoration projects, and will engage in environmental education. Opportunities for travel and camping will be provided.

  • Monthly Living Allowance (Stipend)
    • $1,550/month for crew members
    • $1,700/month for crew leaders

Qualifications
  • Between the ages of 17-21 (crew member) and 21-28 (crew leader)
  • Ability to have transportation to and from American YouthWorks locations
  • US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
  • Commitment to completing the entire term of service
  • Strong service ethic and desire to serve the community and the environment
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions; ability to be away on one overnight trip at the end of their term (up to 7 days, dates and location TBD)
  • Crew Leaders Only
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Clean 3-year Driving Record
  • Prior experience in camping, backcountry travel, or related fieldwork
  • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a 45lb backpack and carrying tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
  • Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
